. >> announcer: right now abc7 news begins with breaking miss. >> sky 7 hd live over mountain view where a car has hit and killed a pedestrian near a bus stop. investigation into how this happened is underway. good morning i'm terry mcsweeney in for cheryl jennings. and i'm kristen sze. david louie has just arrived at the scene. >> reporter: as you can see this is an active investigation scene. we are at -- there's a bus shoulder behind me where a person was standing waiting for a vta bus when a late

model audi going eastbound on california lost control and struck the person waiting in that bus shelter. down the street you can see what remains of the audi. it traveled a little distance perhaps another 500 feet or so then ended up on the curb. the person who was in the bus shelter has been confirmed as a fatality. person who was behind the wheel of the car, that person has been injured and is at a local hospital undergoing treatment there were multiple witnesses. police are in the process of trying to get as much information as possible. we can see an overview of the situation. the police and fire department have a three to four block area cordoned off. these streets will cause diverses for the next four hours -- diversion for the next four hours will they are able to chart out the path of the car where the pedestrian was hit where the person waiting at the bus stop was

hit, et cetera, still a fluid situation. again, lots of diversions in mountain view. we will keep you up dad -- updatedded. we are also following developments in a fatal fire in berkeley. fire killed a woman 2:30 this morning. a story we first brought you at 4:30. katie marzullo has been on the scene all morning. >> reporter: we just learned from investigators that there were heat detectors inside this home. we don't know if those were functioning at the time of the fire. take a look at this house as investigators look for the cause you can't see much damage from the front most is around the back there were eight young dumbs in this home when the house -- young adults

in this home when the house caught fire one woman did not make it out alive. >> maybe the flames were 50 feet, i don't know there were embers flying through my house and the next house. >> reporter: smoke rises from the roof the fire just extinguished flames claimed the life of a young woman who was on the third floor in the attic space. >> they were able to retrieve her out and bring her out to the air. once she was out of the structure she was being assessed, cpr was initiated. sometime later the patient was determined to have passed. >> reporter: an ambulance rushed two others to the hospital with burn injuries and smoke inhalation. five others made it out okay. survivors sat sadly on the curb staring straight ahead. >> they are students they come and go they are nice young people. >> reporter: investigators must tread lightly as they try to determine the cause of this deadly fire the old house

suffered more damage than apparent interest the street. >> we have significant fire damage to the rear we have to worry about collapse. this will be a detailed process. we had a fatality in the fire. we just want to make sure we cross every t and dot every i. >> reporter: as investigators go about their detective work neighbors are trying turn from tragedy to an important safety reminder. >> not something we expect what we should be prepared for is always earthquake fireproof preparedness. >> reporter: again latest on the scene is investigators did find heat detectors inside. we've asked multiple times whether there were working smoke detectors? investigators have not yet determined that. katie marzullo, abc7 news. meantime, vallejo woman being called a hero for rousting a sleeping family from their burning home. this fire broke out before 3:00 this morning in the home on round hill court. the vallejo police department

provided these photos. flames gutted the house everyone was safe thanks to the actions of a neighbor nobody was hurt and the cause is under investigation. investigators in the east bay trying to figure out what set off a fire that destroyed a 4200 square foot home. the homeowners called 911 after 11:00 last night. one firefighter was treated for minor injuries. everyone living in the home got out safely. san francisco fire investigators are waiting to enter a potentially dangerous building this morning after a massive fire along the waterfront that broke out yesterday afternoon at pier 29. you can see pieces of the structure crashing to the ground. an entire section of the embarcadero was closed until midnight. amy hollyfield is live with the latest. >> reporter: they've red tagged this building, no one is allowed in or around it. you can see they've blocked this huge section, traffic

flowing, street is open, but the sidewalk is closed causing problems for pedestrians, bicyclists and fire investigators. fire investigators had to cut their inspections short yesterday after engineers decided it wasn't safe inside fire damaged pier 29. they are hoping to get back in today. even with their short time taking a look at this fire scene, they feel sure this is not a case of arson. >> there's nothing suspicious. they've given all indications no suspicion to this fire. there were some workers working in the building earlier in the day. they will take a look at that. >> reporter: this section of the sidewalk on the embarcadero is closed indefinitely. >> there's concern the facade could still fall. it is an issue that could be a safety issue for pedestrians and we are trying to keep traffic lanes open. >> reporter: this promenade is popular with runners and tourists. not only is the sidewalk closed but the fence around

the dangerous area takes up a part of a lane of traffic. after a few close calls police decided to try and divert people across the street. >> it is making cars stop to avoid them or quickly change lanes. we are concerned about a collision. >> reporter: some people are ignoring the wishes of police and are going through any way. one bicyclist told us a little risk on the road is something he's used to. >> a little cramped the same as every morning for me just ride down the 'em sometimes a car in the bike laney way. right here wasn't bad just around. >> reporter: they do hope to open this section of the sidewalk by the end of the day tomorrow. this afternoon they are going to be bringing in a crane and start tearing down this main entryway door before any more chunks of it fall. they are going to be proactive with tearing this down and trying to protect people. they say they are working with a historic architect to try and preserve what they can.

about an hour ago jurors began deliberating in the trial of jerry sandusky. sandusky's attorney told jurors in closing arguments his client is the victim of his accusers and their lawyers

residents on hawaii's circumstanceth largest island are talking about the island's new owner. oracle's ceo larry ellison he has bought 19% of lanai from david murdoch the state owns the remaining 2%. the tech tycoon already has a home on the island two resort hotels, golf course, water utility and 88,000 acres. some people are skeptical about the new ownership. others hope it will bring new opportunities. >> [ unintelligible ] younger adults can have a future. >> this island does need some change it is just the rate at which the island will change. >> three thousand people live on that island.
